Iran Economy in Brief – No. 9

First Budget Bill After Lifting The Sanctions

President Hassan Rohani submitted the next Iranian fiscal year – 21 March to 20 March – budget bill to parliament. Budget bill amounts to $89billion: 13% more than this year. Oil revenue forms 25% of the budget bill. Assuming oil price of $37/b, Iran expects to earn $22billion; 20% of it goes to National Development Fund of Iran, and Iran National Oil Company’s share is 14.5%. Taxation should bring $33.7billion, making 38% of the budget bill, experiencing an increase of 17% respect to the current year. Another Government resource is selling securities: with 150% increase, next year the Government hopes to earn $15billion by this means.

Tehran’s Sky Remains Gray

Tehran continues to be polluted. This week elementary schools were again shut for couple of days, and even/odd number plates driving limitations were applied from homes door. This time, however, the Municipality of Tehran is to be blamed. Lack of management, tight regulation and control has led to a badly structured city. Twenty-floors building in an eight-meter-wide allay, is not a rare case in the north of Tehran, wealthiest district, where once was covered by gardens. In a city surrounded by mountains, high towers close all air corridors, preventing any air-movement and keeping the pollution inside. Ease in buying construction permissions and not investing enough in landscape engineering is indeed to be blamed.

Let’s get to know each other

This week business delegations from Czech Republic, Germany, and Slovakia visited Tehran. Chambers of commerce, try to bring the potential partners as close as possible, providing room for B2B negotiations, instead of formal speeches. Lifting double taxation for trade with Czech Rep. and Slovakia encourages them to extend their economic relations with Iran. Experience of both countries in Environmental Management after communism fall, gives them an advantage to be the right partners for Iran in Water Management & Treatment issues. Beside this, Engineering and Machinery, Renewable Energy and Construction with a lower price make their chances even bigger. An agreement of producing 250 Tractors with Czech Rep. has already been singed.
