Iran Economy in Brief – No. 51

Walnuts make you clever

Iran is the third largest producer of walnut in the world. However, this position alone would not guarantee success in world markets. Iran’s Ministry of Agriculture has announced a ten-year plan to improve walnut orchards for a better quality of walnut, based on the expected increase in production of walnuts from 2 tons per hectare to 5 tons per hectare and Iran hopes to get its place back with an estimated costs of around 1550 USD per hectare.

Iran’s production of walnuts is approximately 230 thousand tons, having 153 thousand hectares of land dedicated to walnut orchards of which 110 thousand hectares are fertile. Iran exports 5000 tons of walnuts annually which is valued at nearly $35m.

A week of transportation for Iran

Boeing who had started selling aircrafts to Iran after Airbus, succeeded in signing a contract with Iran before its rival. Boeing will sell 80 aircrafts to Iran in ten years.

“The contract is in leasing form and Boeing has accepted to finance building six aircrafts itself. Once all 80 aircrafts are delivered, the Iranian air-fleet will have 50000 new seats”, said Abbas Akhundi, Minister of Roads and Urban Development.

The first aircraft is expected to be delivered in 18 months and Mr Akhundi believes considering the maintenance and also indirect jobs associated with the increase in tourism, buying 80 new aircrafts will create at least 8000 new jobs in the country.

Airbus final contract is expected to be signed shortly.

Not only aircrafts but also water-crafts

Iran is renewing not only her air fleet but also the shipping fleet. After a year of negotiations, Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines (IRISL) and Hyundai sign a contract for building new heavy ships for Iran, financed by South Korean Banks and companies.

Hyundai Heavy Industries, the world’s largest ship builder will construct both mega-size 14 and 500 TEU container ships which are 366 meters long and 49000-ton oil and chemical tankers. The first ship is to be delivered by September 2018.

Alongside this contract, in order to improve Iranian ship building, Hyundai Heavy Industries is to conduct a consultation and technical follow-up plan with an Iranian Shipyard by the request of the IRISL.
