The Minister of Roads and Urbanization, Abbas Akhundi has proposed a restructuring in the insurance system in order to increase road safety. In Iran, contrary to many countries, insurance history is attached to vehicles rather than drivers. Thus, a safe driver would be forced to pay a higher insurance premium if they purchase a vehicle with a history of accidents. Mr. Akhundi emphasized that 600 million tons of cargo are transported across the country which provide employment for 600 thousand people. Ghanoon writes, when the number of vehicles on the road was limited, mechanical control was possible. However, 30 million vehicles are operated over 200 thousand kilometers of motorway and therefore, the road network should be made smart so the details of drivers and passengers are available at all times.
