What Do Iranians Eat?

According to a study by FAO, Iranians eats rice seven-times more than Europeans. We also eat three-times more bread than our European friends.

Annual wheat and rice consumption per capita in Iran are 177 Kg and 38 Kg respectively. These figures for developed countries are 60 Kg and 12.4 Kg respectively.

Although Iran is the fourth largest producer of fruits, FAO says that Iranians on average eat only one-fourth of global average, i.e. each Iranian eats 30 Kg of fruits and vegetables per year.

On the other hand, our sugar and cooking-oil consumption are also beyond the global figures. However, average sugar consumption in the world is about 30 Kg per year, each Iranian takes 33 Kg of sugar per annum. As for other kinds of cooking-oil, consumption per capita is 17 Kg per year.

As red-meet is getting more expensive, it becomes rarer for low-income families. Though Iran Chamber of Commerce gave a report that red-meet consumption per capita in Iran is about 7.5 Kg per year, it also indicates that this figure for low-income households reaches only 0.9 Kg per head per year. Wealthy Iranian families, though, consume up to 17 Kg of red meat per person in a year.
