Nakhchivan – Mashad Direct Train

The first direct passenger-train from Nakhchivan, to Mashhad, has reached the final destination on Saturday morning, 31 December 2016.

The direct route from Nakhchivan and Mashhad, a holly city in Iran and the second largest city of the country, was planned according to an agreement between the two country in February 2016.

The path is 1858 Km long, going through Julfa, Tabriz, Zanjan, Shahroud and finally reaching Mashhad. The ticket costs 40 CHF, equivalent to 1580000 IRR.

“Today’s train had three cars which belong to Azerbaijan. The train is scheduled twice a week, though this can be increased in case of high demand”, said Mirhosein Mousavi, Vice-president of Iran Railway.

Most of the passengers has been predicted to be from Nakhchivan, though tickets can be purchased online also in Iran.

The dominant religion in Azerbaijan is Islam by nearly 97% of the population, where 85% of them are Shia Muslims. These people travel to Iran quite often to visit the holly shrine of Imam Reza, the eighth Shia Leader, in Mashhad.
