Mining Industry in Iran needs to be revived

Although Iran ranks among one of the most resourceful countries by the number of its mines, however mining industry in Iran makes only 0.53 percent of the total GDP.

According to Iran’s Mining House, 98 percent of Iranian mines count as small ones. This is while out of the total 9000 known mines in the country, only half of them are active. These non-active mines are mainly located in Razavi Khorasan Province, Yazd, Semnan, Markazi.

Iran defines small mines as those where less than 50 people are working in or where the mining is done by hand.

Iran’s Mining House complains that the Government does not support the private sector enough to re-activate these small mines while they can create lots of jobs.
