High electricity users will be equipped by smart meters

The Tehran Electricity Distribution Company announced: 16,500 three-phase smart meters has been installed for high usage customers under the FAHAM Program.

The FAHAM Program (National Smart Metering Program in Iran) is the first stage in making a smart power grid in Iran which uses IT and telecommunications to transmit data from customers. Based on this program, one million smart counters will be installed for customers in 6 provinces. The FAHAM Program, started in September 2015, has already seen the installation of 113,000 three-phase meters and 14,000 single phase meters.

Regarding the progress of the project, the Iranian Deputy of Energy Efficiency, Hadi Modaghegh, said: “We estimate that by installation of 450,000 smart meters for large customers and agricultural wells, over 30,000 MW which is half the maximum charge of the network, will become observable. This will allow peak shaving and management of 3 MW of power, under peak network usage.’

The total number of meters installed on agricultural wells is close to 20,000. For the advancement of FAHAM, 350 billion IRR ($11m) of financing is monthly needed and currently three main contractors, Moham Shargh Group, Safa Niku Company and Farab Company, are working on the project.

“The law states that in the next step, by using non-governmental investments, all customers of electricity and water will be equipped with the smart meters. Currently, we are studying various ways to finance this stage and negotiations are underway with domestic and foreign investors for the next phases”, continued Modaghegh.
